A quiet suburban Chicago community was rocked this week after a 2-year-old boy died in what authorities are describing as a domestic-related homicide. The boy’s mother was hospitalized after police reportedly found her attempting to harm herself inside the family’s Frankfort, Illinois, home.

Frankfort police were called to the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday following a report of an unresponsive child. A 17-year-old girl had called 911 and was administering CPR to the toddler when officers arrived, according to local reporting.

First responders continued efforts to save the boy before rushing him to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead. Police have not released his name or disclosed how he died, but a preliminary investigation led authorities to classify the case as a domestic-related homicide.

Officers searching the house also encountered the boy’s mother as she was attempting self-harm, police said. She was transported to an area hospital, where authorities said she remained under observation Wednesday. Most reports, citing police, described her injuries as non-life-threatening. The mother has not been publicly identified, and investigators have not named her or anyone else as a suspect.

The Frankfort Fire Protection District said five people were transported from the property after emergency crews were dispatched. Officials have not identified the other three people or explained why they were taken for medical treatment.

The Will County Coroner’s Office said the child’s death appeared to be a homicide, though an official cause and manner remained pending police and toxicology reports. The Frankfort Police Department and Will Grundy Major Crimes Task Force are handling the investigation.

The large home remained sealed off Wednesday as investigators moved through the property. Police tape stretched across the normally peaceful cul-de-sac while a memorial began to grow outside. Neighbors said officers remained at the scene late into Tuesday night.

“I’m very shocked,” one neighbor told ABC 7 Chicago. “I can’t believe that I’m seeing police tape, you know, and really not knowing what’s going on.”

Resident Carolyn Pappas described the child’s death as “absolutely heartbreaking” and said the circumstances immediately reminded some residents of the Lindsay Clancy case. Clancy, a Massachusetts mother and former nurse, admitted to killing her three young children in January 2023 before attempting suicide. Her attorneys maintain she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and was not criminally responsible, while prosecutors argue that she understood her actions and deliberately killed the children.

“This is just absolutely devastating, that this could be another Lindsay Clancy situation in our neighborhood, in our community,” Pappas told NBC Chicago.

However, authorities have not made that comparison, disclosed a possible motive or said whether mental illness played any role in the Frankfort case. Police also have not accused the mother of killing her son. The similarities discussed by neighbors are limited to the death of a young child and the mother’s reported attempt to harm herself.

The tragedy unfolded as jurors in Clancy’s Massachusetts murder trial remained unable to reach a unanimous verdict after days of deliberations. Her case has fueled a broader national debate over postpartum mental illness and the legal standard for criminal responsibility.

Pappas said the Frankfort death should remind people that serious personal struggles are often hidden from those living nearby.

“You never think that this is something that could happen,” she said. “You don’t know what’s happening behind closed doors.”

Frankfort police offered condolences while asking residents to support one another as the investigation continues.

“Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy,” the department said. “We encourage our community to support one another with compassion, understanding, and strength as we navigate this difficult time together.”
