What makes a better brand?
Simply put, a more sustainable brand makes sure it has a positive impact in every aspect of its work. Good On You rates brands on their policies and actions across three key sustainability pillars: people, planet, and animals.
Among the many things we look at (there are 100 key issues, in fact), is evidence that a brand’s workers are treated fairly across the supply chain, including policies and practices on child labour, forced labour, worker safety, the right to join a union, and payment of a living wage. We also look at resource and energy management, whether a brand is actively reducing its carbon emissions, managing its impact on our waterways, and using and disposing of chemicals safely.
Finally, we analyse the use of animal products like wool, leather, fur, angora, down feather, shearling, karakul, and exotic animal skin and hair, or in the case of beauty, whether it uses animal-derived ingredients. Ideally, the brand is 100% vegan.
We give each brand an overall rating which you’ll see throughout this list, but you can find out more about a brand’s rating on our directory.
Now you know what makes a more responsible brand, you might decide to shop from companies located in your country or region. Whether it is to support your community at home or reduce your carbon footprint when shopping online, shopping locally can have positive benefits.

UpCircle Beauty
UpCircle Beauty was created with circularity in mind: “Our ultimate mission is to leave the world better than we found it by transforming ingredients that would otherwise be discarded into natural, organic beauty products,” says the brand.
Lush
Lush is a British brand created in 1995 to make beauty products from fresh ingredients. It reduces packaging waste by offering solid products and has long been a leader in anti-animal-testing cosmetics.
Komodo
UK brand Komodo puts people and the planet first with its lower-impact range of menswear and womenswear. The label uses some more responsible materials including GOTS-certified cotton and hemp, and ensures that most of its suppliers pay a living wage to their workers.

COSSAC believes in creating timeless, feminine, and versatile apparel responsibly. It promotes the minimalistic concept of capsule wardrobes, offering contemporary classics intended to be worn and cherished beyond seasonal trends. It uses organic or lower-impact materials and works exclusively with small factories on limited production runs to minimise waste and deadstock.

Ninety Percent is a British label making stylish womenswear. It was founded with the mission to share 90% of its profits between five charitable causes and those who make its collections happen, and it publishes details of its suppliers and factories on its website.
