Sometimes we feel hopeless, and he is honest that for some people, especially young people now, that feeling runs very deep. The main thing underneath it, in his teaching, is that we have lost our purpose and our sense of direction. So the work is to reconnect with purpose. If you feel there is some purpose, even a very difficult one, even when everything is upside down, you can still move your life forward and face what comes. But how do you find purpose when you have none? Start small, he says. Begin with the people around you, friends or family or anyone you can connect with. Then write down a few things. Today I will make my day. Something a little bit meaningful: time with family, a few minutes or a few hours. Or today I will clean the house, wash the dishes, eat something healthy. Today I will give special time to myself and drink a coffee. And afterwards, appreciate it. I washed the dishes, wonderful. I talked to my friends. Slowly, slowly. The deeper purpose, he says, is discovering our true nature. We carry a great deal of baggage, but underneath it the deeper level is more. At the beginning nobody believes that, and he admits he did not either, the first time he received the teaching. Now it is where his energy and joy come from, discovering that innate quality. And the second purpose is sharing it with others. Though even practising for yourself is already helping. You are part of this world, and caring for yourself is caring for it.
