Numerous lawmakers and critics blasted President Donald Trump’s Friday announcement that he had struck a deal to obtain millions of tons of Russian diesel after several years of U.S. and international pressure on Moscow over its war against Ukraine.

“I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Friday.

The Treasury Department followed up Trump’s post with a statement saying it has issued a “temporary general license to allow the supply of Russian diesel to the global market.”

The stunning move comes less than a month after Trump signed a sweeping piece of legislation aimed at starving off Russia’s energy revenue.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the announcement “a weak decision,” saying it played right into “Russia’s hands — allowing it to kill more, wage war for longer, have even less respect for America, and inflict even greater losses and damage on the world.”

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle were quick to condemn the move, with many saying Trump was helping to fuel Putin’s war machine for the purpose of lowering global oil prices ahead of the midterm elections.

“You know how Trump could bring down gas and diesel prices? By ending his illegal war with Iran,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wrote on X.

“70% of Americans support Ukraine. Propping up Putin’s war economy is morally wrong as he uses that money to bomb cities,” Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) wrote on X.

Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) called the bipartisan move to give Trump expanded tariff power in the sanctions bill a “mistake.”

“Now he’s *lifting* sanctions on Russian fossil fuels,” Beyer wrote on X.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), a fierce critic of Trump, even called on Ukraine to ramp up its attacks on Russia’s energy infrastructure following the announcement.

“Ukraine needs to double down on hitting Russian oil now,” Kinzinger wrote on X.

Peace never comes through weakness. Today, representatives of the U.S. Congress were in Kyiv – a bipartisan delegation – and I am grateful to them for visiting Ukraine at such a difficult time. They asked: what is needed to end the war? The answer must be strong. There must be…

This announcement is a disgrace.

You know how Trump could bring down gas and diesel prices? By ending his illegal war with Iran.

Instead, he's going to help fund Putin's war machine. https://t.co/nBtYpojX3B

— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) October 9, 2026

Trump is doing a deal with the devil to try to help his flailing political fortunes from the shockingly high diesel prices caused by his own reckless, illegal war in the Middle East.

This filthy deal will only aid and abet the same Putin who is helping the Iranians to target… https://t.co/lEILjnE38R

— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) October 9, 2026

Trump’s illegal forever war is sending gas prices through the roof.

His solution? Handing Putin a payday to the tune of billions of dollars as Russia continues to help Iran target our troops.

My colleagues and I introduced the bipartisan NOPE Act to stop Trump from… https://t.co/qgAfqzgFBA

— Senator Ruben Gallego (@SenRubenGallego) October 9, 2026

Donald Trump’s war in Iran has sent prices skyrocketing.

Trump could lower costs today by ending this reckless war. Instead, he’s aiding Russia and betraying Ukraine in a desperate attempt to temporarily bring prices down. https://t.co/DZH3cZC2Lp

— Rep. Brendan Boyle (@CongBoyle) October 9, 2026

Infuriating—but this is what we warned anyone who would listen: Trump isn't the slightest bit trustworthy when it comes to Russia.

Giving him expanded tariff powers in hopes he would use them to help Ukraine was a mistake.

Now he's *lifting* sanctions on Russian fossil fuels. https://t.co/3j38fkA3rz

— Rep. Don Beyer (@RepDonBeyer) October 9, 2026

70% of Americans support Ukraine. Propping up Putin’s war economy is morally wrong as he uses that money to bomb cities. The President’s policies towards Russia and Ukraine are failures. We need moral clarity not moral ambiguity. https://t.co/puaMaTRIuU

— Rep. Don Bacon 🇺🇸✈️🏍️⭐️🎖️ (@RepDonBacon) October 9, 2026

In other words: Donald Trump is going to try to win back US votes with cheaper gas prices before the midterm elections by enriching Putin’s war machine, so he can keep killing 1000s of Ukrainians. Dire. https://t.co/SlLJh3Kjqe

— Tom Newton Dunn (@tnewtondunn) October 9, 2026

Three weeks ago Trump signed the Lindsey Graham Russia Sanctions bill as a testament to Graham's commitment to put an economic stranglehold on Putin. Today Trump announces we're importing massive fuel from Russia pic.twitter.com/UovDeWW72W

— Sam Stein (@samstein) October 9, 2026

This is absolutely insane. Trump is so desperate to save himself in the election in three weeks he is going to PAY a global pariah that is slaughtering civilians in Ukraine, buying weapons and troops from North Korea and Iran, and supplying intelligence to the Iranians to target… https://t.co/hBppatSw2m

— Fred Wellman (@FPWellman) October 9, 2026

So we passed the Russian sanctions bill and Trump responded by lifting sanctions and the GOP will be silent

— Adam Kinzinger (Slava Ukraini) 🇺🇸🇺🇦 (@AdamKinzinger) October 9, 2026

does this mean we will soon start tariffing ourselves? The bill gave Trump the authority to impose 100% tariffs on the biggest purchasers of Russian oil/gas https://t.co/Yv1jVlT9Z6
