Abdul El-Sayed has written and signed materials that defended or downplayed concerns about the Muslim Brotherhood, particularly during Egypt’s Arab Spring and Mohamed Morsi’s presidency.

Key examples include:

  • 2011 opinion pieces (Huffington Post and The Guardian): He urged U.S. support for anti-Mubarak protesters in Egypt and argued that even if the Muslim Brotherhood took power, the resulting government would “look nothing like Iran” or Hamas, citing differing contexts. He pushed back against Western concerns about the group as exaggerated or bigoted.
  • 2012 open letter: He signed a statement (published in Arabic on Al-Ahram Gate, under the name “Dr. Abdul Rahman El-Sayed” of New York) as one of dozens of Egyptian-American “leaders.” It backed Morsi’s power grab as “revolutionary,” rejected Western criticism, and explicitly called on the Muslim Brotherhood-led government to “purge the media and the police.” This came shortly before a crackdown on journalists and critics.
  • 2021 Substack post (later deleted): He referred to Mohamed Soltan—who was imprisoned in Egypt in connection with efforts supporting the Brotherhood/Morsi government—as his “friend” and used Soltan’s case to illustrate concerns about authoritarian government power.

El-Sayed has repeatedly denied having personal or family ties to the Muslim Brotherhood (including in recent 2026 interviews), describing related claims involving his half-sister’s social media posts about their mother’s college-era activism as “hearsay.” Those posts, however, describe family involvement with the group in Egypt. These writings and the signed letter form the main basis for reports that he expressed support for (or minimized risks associated with) the Muslim Brotherhood in the early 2010s.

I wish this message were going to anyone else, but I need someone I can trust. Someone who understands what’s at stake for our country and for President Trump’s legacy.

Truthfully, I haven’t slept much this week.

I had a series of meetings--with Republican leadership in DC, with trusted friends back home, with people who usually know how to steady my nerves--and I’m not supposed to tell you this, but I can’t keep it inside:

If I don’t hit my fundraising goal, we’re done.

Not set back.

Not “in trouble.”

Doomed. Done. Kaput.
