President Donald Trump’s plan to pin the government shutdown on Democrats isn’t quite landing, according to a poll published by The Washington Post on Thursday.

In a survey of 1,010 Americans, 47% said Trump and the Republican-led Congress are most responsible for the political standoff, while 30% of respondents blamed Democratic lawmakers and 23% said they are “not sure.”

Broken down along party lines, the data also showed a significant gap between both parties’ beliefs.

67% of GOP-aligned voters polled said their rival party was at fault, while 87% of Democrats deemed Trump and the Republicans culpable.

Self-identified independents overwhelmingly blamed Trump and Republicans, with results revealing a 50% to 22% margin.

Asked about Democrats central reason for voting against the stopgap budget bill, 71% of the total respondents agreed that federal health insurance subsidies should be extended and only 29% said that they should expire at the end of 2025 as planned.

Republicans are using a range of shady tactics to try and convince voters Democratic legislators are responsible for the shutdown.
