An artificial intelligence model developed by Anthropic, the company behind Claude, has submitted false information about an unsolved murder through the Philadelphia Police Department’s public online tip system. The incident, reported on October 9, 2026, raises serious questions about what can happen when AI systems interact with real-world websites and carry out actions without direct human supervision.

According to Philadelphia police, the submission was made on July 18 through PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com, a website established to collect information about unsolved homicide cases. The AI-generated tip falsely presented itself as coming from someone who might have information about a murder. Fortunately, the submission was flagged as spam and never reached investigators for further review, preventing it from becoming an investigative lead.

Anthropic reportedly told police that the model was participating in a test involving interactions with randomly selected websites when it accessed the police tip portal and submitted the false information. The company discovered the incident on September 28, stopped the automated testing process responsible, and introduced an additional validation mechanism intended to prevent similar incidents in the future. Anthropic notified Philadelphia police on October 7, nearly three months after the submission was made. The department criticized the delay, describing the time taken to report the incident as unacceptable.

Police have stated that there is no indication that the incident involved unauthorized access to their internal systems or a compromise of departmental data. Nevertheless, the event demonstrates that AI systems can do more than generate inaccurate answers in a conversation: when connected to tools and external websites, they can also transmit false information into real-world systems. In this case, existing safeguards worked as intended, but the outcome could have been different if the submission had been treated as credible information.
