Arafat

© UnknownBarred from entering the United States, Yasser Arafat addressed the United Nations General Assembly in Geneva in 1988. He called for recognition of the State of Palestine, which had just declared its independence.

In true Chinese fashion, Xi Jinping reacted violently, but without naming it, to Donald Trump's ban on the State of Palestine from participating in the United Nations General Assembly. This was already the case in 1988, when Ronald Reagan similarly banned Yasser Arafat from participating. Both bans have the same objective: to prevent the General Assembly from granting voting rights to the State of Palestine, already a member of the Organization. However, China is now the world's leading economic power and a military superpower.

The Trump administration will not allow representatives of the State of Palestine to participate in the United Nations General Assembly in September. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has denied them entry visas to the United States to access the UN headquarters in New York. In doing so, the United States is violating the 1947 agreement with the United Nations, which stipulates in Article IV:

"The United States shall not impose any impediment to the transit to or from the central seat of the United Nations in New York of members and officials of the United Nations."

By violating this agreement, the Trump administration is effectively assuming the right to decide which member states can and cannot participate in the work of the United Nations. This includes the State of Palestine, already recognized by 147 of the 193 UN member states, but deprived of voting rights due to the US veto in the Security Council.

The official State Department statement stated that the Trump administration revoked the visas of members of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) and the Palestinian Authority (PA) for the upcoming UN General Assembly, "in the interest of our national security" because "the PLO and the PA are responsible for undermining the prospects for peace through their recourse to the UN International Court of Justice to obtain unilateral recognition of a hypothetical Palestinian state." In addition, the Trump administration announced the suspension of visas for all Palestinian passport holders, preventing them from entering the United States for medical treatment, university attendance, visiting relatives, and business activities. Simultaneously, the Trump administration announced that it is studying the "Gaza Post-War Plan," which provides for the "voluntary transfer" of the entire Palestinian population to transform Gaza into a luxurious "Middle Eastern Riviera." Thus, while Israel continues its genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, the United States is dismantling the foundations of the State of Palestine.

The global dominance that the United States, the greatest Western power, seeks to maintain at all costs by violating the most basic norms of international law is provoking growing opposition from the Global South. This was confirmed by the meeting of the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (China, Russia, Belarus, Iran, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and various other countries). At the meeting held in China, President Xi reiterated the basic principles:

"First, we must respect the principle of sovereign equality. We must uphold the principle that all countries, regardless of their size, strength, and wealth, are equal participants, decision-makers, and beneficiaries in global governance. We must promote greater democracy in international relations and increase the representation and voice of developing countries."

The US response is clear. In a recent speech in Singapore, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said:

"We are equipping 'American' warfighters with the most advanced capabilities to remain the strongest and most lethal military force. We are reorienting ourselves toward deterring aggression from Communist China. It should be clear to all that Beijing is credibly preparing to potentially use military force to alter the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific. If deterrence fails, we are prepared to do what the Department of Defense does best: fight and win, decisively."

Against this backdrop is the military parade that was held in Beijing on September 3rd to mark the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the War of Resistance waged by China against the Japanese invasion from 1931 to 1945. With its Resistance, which cost more than 35 million lives and enormous suffering, China contributed significantly to the defeat of Japan. Then, from 1945 to 1949, it had to fight against Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang, financed and armed by the United States, following Japan, to make China their own colony.

The advanced weaponry displayed in the military parade on September 3rd is a warning that China does not seek war but, if attacked, is ready for war.
