Steven Crowder, host of the Louder with Crowder program, announced Thursday that he is suing CNN, the digital media company Jubilee, and Texas Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico. The action follows a town hall event held the previous day by CNN and Jubilee featuring Talarico, in which a segment used the title and format associated with Crowder’s long-running “Change My Mind” series.

The October 14 event, which was moderated by CNN’s Erin Burnett in Fort Worth, Texas, consisted of Talarico engaging face-to-face with a mixed audience of voters, including undecided participants, on topics such as abortion, immigration, energy, and corruption. CNN and Jubilee referred to the one-on-one voter interaction portion as “Change My Mind.”

Crowder stated that CNN explicitly used the phrase for the segment “no less than 10 times.”

Crowder’s company, LWC IP Assets LLC, owns the registered trademark “CHANGE MY MIND” under U.S. Registration No. 5960565 (Serial No. 88495879). The mark was filed on July 1, 2019, and registered on January 14, 2020. It covers “entertainment services, namely, providing on-going webisodes featuring comedy and politics via a global computer network; Providing information, news and commentary in the field of entertainment.”

Crowder’s series has featured tables set up in public locations, frequently college campuses, with a sign displaying a position followed by the phrase “CHANGE MY MIND,” inviting passersby to discuss the topic at-hand.

During Thursday’s program, Crowder discussed the event and announced that he will be filing a lawsuit. “Well, I guess we should officially announce that we’re suing.” He added, “Maybe Jubilee has generated all of their profit off of a completely unoriginal idea, disguised it, and then the mask came off.”

The podcast host went on to state that his team is working to identify how the patent was disregarded, and by whom. “We need to find out who flagrantly disregarded the trademark, who flagrantly plagiarized, who profited off of it most, and for what degree of time,” Crowder said.

“Once you rip it off, and you profit, and you use it for propaganda, I now have a problem. Why did you not do that before? All this time, you never came up with this idea because these people were incapable of doing it.”
