Retired pro-wrestler and former governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura slammed President Donald Trump as a “coward” for getting out of serving in Vietnam but having the audacity to say he has the skills to be a general in the U.S. military.

Ventura defended his decision to call Trump a “fascist” during a conversation with political streamer Hasan Piker this past Sunday, saying that as a U.S. Navy veteran, “I think I have the right and have earned my opinion of both my country and anything else.”

“When I speak out against my country, I don’t want anybody bringing up patriotism,” he went on.

Ventura compared his history to Trump’s record, saying, “Here’s the part that pisses me off: I did two tours, 17 months. So did my brother. Southeast Asia. That was at the same time Donald Trump was running and hiding like the coward he is.”

“Why didn’t he join us in the Vietnam War? I’ve heard him talk. He said he should be a general!” Ventura said of Trump, who received five draft deferments from 1968 to 1968 before being reclassified as permanently exempt from military service in 1972.

As Piker reminded Ventura that the president received a medical deferment for bone spurs in his heels, Ventura joked, “Well, fine and dandy, never stopped him from golf, did it?”

Mocking Trump’s bravado, the ex-politician said he wished he could ask the president, “Why didn’t Trump join us? If he’s as smart as a general, I would appeal to him today. Donald, we could have won!”

When Piker pointed out how the U.S.’s protracted war with Iran probably reveals the reality of Trump’s military prowess, Ventura said, “We would have never gone through any of this had Donald Trump had courage and gone to Vietnam.”

“He’d have known what Jesse Ventura knows,” the ex-politician continued. “You can’t go into a 4,000-year-old country and bomb them into submission.”
