Australia has joined Japan in urging calm after a Chinese military aircraft locked its radar onto Japanese fighter jets.

‘We are deeply concerned by the actions of China in the last 24 hours,’ Defence Minister Richard Marles said Sunday while visiting Tokyo for talks with his Japanese counterpart Shinjiro Koizumi.

Tensions have recently stirred between Tokyo and Beijing over military activity near Taiwan, which China claims should be part of its territory.
