A Virginia man has been arrested after allegedly getting caught in an incredibly sickening act that betrays those who bled for our country during World War II.

As InsideNoVa.com reported, Prince William County police officers responded to an incident involving the historic Iwo Jima monument in Quantico near Richmond Highway and Fuller Road.

The statue is located roughly two miles from Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.

Upon arrival, officers found a thug who has since been identified as 27-year-old Miguel Alonso Maldonado Soriano of Stafford.

Police say he was actively damaging the structure using a sledgehammer.

The officers quickly detained Maldonado Soriano.

Police later noted extensive destruction to the monument, including the removal of one of the soldiers’ heads. All told, the damage to the monument is estimated in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

According to InsideNoVa.com, Maldonado Soriano has been charged with the following offenses: felony destruction of property, trespass with intent to damage property, and felony injury to a monument.

Maldonado Soriano is being held without bond. Per WJLA, his court date is pending.

Police have not revealed why Maldonado Soriano decided to attack the monument.

As Patch.com notes, the Iwo Jima statue stands near one entrance to Marine Base Quantico and is a short walk from the National Museum of the Marine Corps. It was carved out of limestone by Felix de Weldon in 1945.

The Quantico statue is one of several smaller-scale statues Weldon created of the scene.

Patch.com also notes that Weldon would recreate the scene as the 100-ton bronze Iwo Jima Monument. This currently sits in front of Arlington National Cemetery.

The Arlington National Cemetery monument was dedicated in 1954.
