Orgo-Life the new way to the future

In the market for some ethical gloves or scarves this winter? I’ve rounded up some of my UK sustainable favourites for you so you don’t have to search too hard.

If you’ve been searching for a new pair of ethical gloves or a scarf this winter, then you’ll know they can be tricky things to find. From the materials used to production methods, there’s a surprising amount to consider if you’re after gloves or scarves that align with your eco-friendly values.

Fortunately, I’ve done all the sleuthing for you and found the earth-conscious brands that don’t leave sustainability out in the cold.

Guide to Ethical Gloves and Scarves

If you’re in need of an ethical winter warmer, here is my round-up of some of my favourite ethical gloves. As an added bonus, I’ve also included the ethical winter scarves that I’ve come across in my search:

Seasalt

Person wearing a cream wool jumper and fair isle gloves from ethical and sustainable retailer Seasalt.

Ethical retailer Seasalt – the first fashion company to achieve Soil Association Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certification back in 2005 – has a great seasonal range of ethical hats, gloves, and snoods for men and women, priced from £27.95.

These are made from responsible materials, including recycled nylon, non-mulesed merino wool, or wool that meets the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). This is a standard that ensures wool comes from farms that have a progressive approach to land management and respect for animal welfare.

Seasalt also ships its products plastic-free, which is also a great move.

Nearly New Cashmere Co.

If you’re looking for a zero-waste way to keep cosy this winter, then try The Nearly New Cashmere Co.

This British brand restores and sells preloved cashmere clothing. For any 100% cashmere jumpers too far gone to restore, it upcycles them into these cosy fingerless gloves (from £26). This gives a new life to jumpers that would otherwise be unwearable.

Beautifully soft and non-itchy, they are very practical in cold weather – and keep your fingers free for essential tasks. They’re available in a wide range of colours – the difficult bit is picking out your favourite shade!

Alongside gloves, The Nearly New Cashmere Co. also makes beautiful neck warmers and hats that are well worth checking out.

Dilling

Pair of oatmeal coloured organic and plastic-free mittens from Dilling.

Dilling is a good choice if you are looking for natural fibre mittens (£29.99), free from any plastic. They are made from 100% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified lambswool, making them naturally soft, breathable and warm. They also come in four different colours.

All the wool Dilling uses comes from mulesing-free sheep, and it avoids the use of heavy metals when dyeing its wool.

One thing I particularly like about Dilling is its approach to transparency. The company owns its own dye house, cutting facility and factory, giving it greater control over how its clothes are made and who makes them.

And if your mittens develop a hole, you don’t have to throw them away. Dilling sells repair patches and provides a handy repair guide to help you make your clothes last longer.

Isabella Oliver

Blonde person wearing a red recycled wool hat and scarf from Isabella Oliver

Isabella Oliver may be better known as an ethical maternitywear brand, but it’s a little-known fact that it also has a solid range of sustainable hats, scarves, and balaclavas (from £39). Find these in a range of colours.

These are all made in Europe from recycled wool, and Isabella Oliver promises that its accessories were transported to its warehouse by road, not air.

Devold

Person with blonde plaits outdoors wearing a pair of grey devold ethical gloves and a black hat and jacket.

Finally, Devold is a Norwegian brand (from £20 at Alpinetrek) that specialises in wool-based jumpers and accessories, such as hats, gloves, and mittens that keep you warm in winter, even when the mercury is plummeting.

These are all ethically made in Norway, from 100% organic merino wool that is free from mulesing.

More Sustainable Recommendations

I will keep this page updated as I come across more great ethical finds. Meanwhile, if you are looking for more cold-weather inspiration, then look no further!
