Four people have been shot at a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in North Carolina, according to police.

Police in Concord said three of the victims are in a "critical" condition following the incident.

They have appealed for witnesses, and officers are reviewing footage of the event - which was advertised as "family friendly". The shooting happened on Union Street South, close to the intersection with Corban Avenue.

A police statement read: "Concord Police, Concord Fire, and Cabarrus County EMS personnel were already at the event and responded immediately, providing medical aid and evacuating attendees.

"Four gunshot wound victims were transported to the hospital. Three are in critical condition and one is in stable condition.

"Police are reviewing footage from the event and speaking with multiple witnesses."

The city's 28th annual tree lighting ceremony was also set to feature a showing of The Grinch on a large screen, as well as live music and fireworks.
