Gods Helped Perseus Slay Medusa & Birth Pegasus! During his legendary quest, Perseus was favored with the divine guidance of both Hermes and Athena. Tradition suggests that Athena’s intervention in the slaying of Medusa was prompted by the Gorgon’s hubris, as she had dared to compare her own beauty to that of the goddess. To aid him in his task, the hero received several mystical artifacts from various nymphs: the winged sandals for flight, a sacred pouch known as a kibisis to contain the Gorgon’s head, and the Cap of Invisibility from the realm of Hades. Furthermore, Hermes bestowed upon him a formidable adamantine sickle. Perseus reached the lair of the Gorgons while they remained in slumber; as he stood over the creatures, Athena directed his hand, instructing him to view only the reflection within his bronze shield to avoid the petrifying gaze of the sisters.
