Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayWhere does the voice come from? This film asks three people to trace their own self-criticism back to its beginning, and the answers are different in every detail and the same in shape. One learned early that being the smart kid was how you got seen, and that at home, performing well was the surest way to keep the peace. One grew up amid a great deal of violence and poverty, in a family that taught by command. One learned very early that there was something about himself his father would not accept, and decided that if he could be perfect in every way, he could never be disowned. He struggled badly at school, took that to mean he was not very smart, and was not very kind to himself. Danielle LaPorte names the message underneath all of it. We are born into some version of original sin. If it does not come from religion it comes from school, or family, or a feed, and it says the same thing: you are not enough, no matter what you do. Not thin enough, not rich enough, not accomplished enough, not zen enough. Whichever direction you run, it is never enough. Rick Hanson, a clinical psychologist working where brain science meets contemplative practice, is clear about what to do with that. Most of us know we judge ourselves too much, and most of us have no idea how deep it runs. There is a place for healthy remorse. But we do not need to tear ourselves down. In the short run, harsh self-criticism might improve performance. Over time, it wears us down. And the people who sustain excellence across a whole career, he observes, do not usually beat themselves up. They guide themselves instead. Want to go deeper? Join Sounds True One for more like this.
