Ten years after Donald Trump’s surprise 2016 presidential election victory over her, Hillary Clinton was asked how she believes her former rival has changed.

And, on the eve of the 2026 midterm elections, the former secretary of state did not hold back. “So, where is he now? Look, I think that he’s lost the plot,” Clinton told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Monday.

Back in 2016, Trump at least “had a theory of the case,” she argued. “He knew how he wanted to present himself. He had people around him who at least had some ability to rein him in or to say no to him.”

Now, Clinton said, Trump is “totally unfettered and unhinged.”

She pointed to his decision to speak at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool on Monday, the renovation of which she described as “one of the great failures of his efforts to redo Washington,” as evidence.

Trump, whose GOP is forecast to perform poorly in Tuesday’s vote amid a cost-of-living crisis and stubborn inflation, went “on and on about all of his projects, ripping up Washington, destroying the East Wing, building an arch that will interfere with air traffic control, navigation in and out of Washington,” she noted.

“I mean, you can’t make this up. He is so focused on himself,” Clinton continued, accusing the president of just wanting “to build tributes to himself in the image of himself.”

“I mean, he’s truly lost the plot of being president for the American people, of winning a midterm election that would be better than what I think is going to happen to him tomorrow,” she said.

Clinton then doubled down on her fear about what could follow the midterms.

“I do worry about how much more out of control he might get,” she said. “Therefore, having a Congress and having the courts and having state attorneys generals and others all working to try to control the damage that he could do is going to be really important.”

Last week, Clinton predicted Trump will “most likely launch more attacks on Iran, which I think put more American lives, not just military, but civilian lives at risk” and also “demand even greater loyalty from the Republicans to stick with him” if Democrats win big.
