Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Wednesday that it had carried out “devastating” missile strikes against US forces stationed at the Al-Azraq air base in Jordan. The IRGC said a “significant number” of ballistic missiles, using both solid and liquid fuel, struck areas used to maintain, prepare and deploy US fighter jets.

“In this operation, aimed at punishing the aggressor, a significant number of ballistic missiles, both solid and liquid fuel, struck the maintenance, preparation, and deployment sites of F-35, F-16, and F-15 fighter jets, as well as their shelters, inflicting heavy damage on the enemy,” the IRGC said in a statement carried by Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency.

The IRGC said the attack was carried out in retaliation for US strikes on Iranian oil tankers.

It separately claimed that the maintenance, preparation and deployment hangars for F-35, F-16 and F-15 fighter jets, along with fighter shelters, had been hit.

The claims have not been independently verified.

Video footage from Jordan shows missiles streaking across the night sky as Jordanian air defences intercepted at least eight Iranian missiles over Amman and other parts of the country. The barrage came as Iranian state and semi-official media reported that missiles had been fired towards a US military base in Jordan.

Multiple types of missiles were seen over the Jordanian-Syrian border. Iranian media outlets linked to the IRGC described the attack as the largest missile barrage launched by Iran since the 40-day war.

Iranian outlets also claimed that cluster munitions had been used and that the Muwaffaq al-Salti Air Base in Jordan’s Zarqa governorate was targeted.

Syrian state television reported separately that missiles from Iran had been intercepted over the Jordanian border city of Irbid.
