Country singer Jelly Roll used his guest-hosting appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! to deliver several jokes directed at President Donald Trump. The comments, which were made during his August 24 opening monologue, drew attention in part because of the artist’s earlier public interaction with Trump.

Jelly Roll, who was among an assortment of guest host whom have filled in for titular host Jimmy Kimmel during his summer hiatus, opened by discussing the Freedom 250 Grand Prix IndyCar race held in Washington, D.C. He showed a clip of Trump waving the green flag to start the event and remarked on the president’s handling of the flag.

The monologue then turned to a Washington Post report that doctors had expressed concern about Trump’s weight after a recent physical. According to the report cited on the show, Trump had gained 14 pounds and weighed nearly 240 pounds. Jelly Roll, who has publicly discussed losing about 300 pounds in recent years, said, “That means I’ve lost an entire Donald Trump.” He added a line about Trump’s approval ratings, stating that “most of the country wants to do the same thing.”

Jelly Roll then told the audience that people should not mock the president’s weight because Trump “would never do that to other people.” The show followed with a montage of clips in which Trump used terms such as “fat slob” and “fat pig” when describing others. Jelly Roll responded, “Well, if that ain’t the pot calling the kettle fat,” and added, “Well Mr. President, from one fat pig to another, take it from me that physical fitness is very important. And trust me, you’ll be happy to see your penis again.”

The remarks surprised some viewers. In November 2024, Jelly Roll met then-president-elect Trump at UFC 309 in New York. Video showed the two shaking hands and speaking briefly. On his then-wife’s podcast, Jelly Roll described the encounter as “cool” and said he would have met any sitting president, including Joe Biden, because of respect for the office. He has repeatedly described himself as not political.

Some fans who associated Jelly Roll with Trump supporters expressed disappointment. Online comments included questions about whether he was a MAGA supporter and statements that the jokes were unexpected.

Others called the comments a departure from his earlier image and said they would stop listening to his music. He later responded by telling Trump supporters that he doesn’t want them to listen to his music.
