When Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin publicly condemned New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for shielding roughly 15,000 criminal migrants from deportation, he was not engaging in partisan theater. He was naming a substantive failure of governance that is affecting communities across the country.

Federal authorities issued those 15,000 detainers—for illegal aliens who are facing nearly 50,000 felony charges including murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, and weapons offenses—yet New York’s leadership answered with what Mullin called “absolute silence.”

These individuals, already in custody for crimes against the public, were released back into communities rather than handed over for removal. Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist who has used executive power to defy federal authority on immigration enforcement, audit city agencies for any residual cooperation with ICE, and bar federal agents from city property without judicial warrants, has treated this non-cooperation as a moral imperative.

This is not a marginal policy dispute. It is the operational expression of a worldview that inverts the basic duties of elected officials. The first obligation of a mayor is the safety of the people who live and work under his authority. Sanctuary regimes reverse that hierarchy: the interests of noncitizens who have entered illegally and then committed further crimes are elevated above the safety of citizens and legal residents.
