The holding of the tourism festival, at a time when thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs) continued to lead a cluttered existence in the relief camps, had triggered outrage. The IDPs had vented their ire by taking out protest marches.

They also made attempts to return to their original homes in or near Kuki areas, citing the return of peace and normalcy as evident from the holding of the festival. Security personnel had thwarted the attempts.

The government appealed to people to stand united against unlawful elements and extend cooperation towards maintaining peace, harmony and public order to bring the State back to the path of growth and development.

“The government appeals to the general public to immediately report any instance of threat, extortion, coercion, or suspicious activity to the nearest police station. Prompt punitive action will be taken on all credible reports against those threatening the lives and properties of people,” the government assured. 

It had earlier established an anti-extortion cell with a toll-free number, assuring that the identity of the informant would be kept confidential.
