Laura Gang’s cover is not just pretty to look at. It poses a fun challenge!
The Madison-based graphic designer and illustrator has hidden 10 objects related to the fine arts, theater, classic music, ballet and writing in her design, all in keeping with the Fall Arts Preview, our annual September tradition.
Isthmus arts director Tommy Washbush says he saw Laura’s poster for singer-songwriter Brennen Leigh while at a recent concert at Shitty Barn in Spring Green. “I was struck by its classy design and sophisticated hand lettering,” he says. “Our annual Fall Arts Preview cover works best with somebody who understands lettering and branding, so she seemed like a great fit. She gave us three very usable options, but the ‘I Spy’ concept seemed like the most substantive and creative.”
In her work at Planet Propaganda, Laura has worked with such clients as the Madison Night Mares, American Players Theatre and Duluth Trading Company. When not working, she enjoys keeping up with local plants and wildlife, particularly through walks in Madison parks. She says that the natural beauty and changing of the seasons inspired, in part, her cover illustration.
Other inspiration comes from the hidden pictures feature of classic kids magazine Highlights, which was a childhood favorite. “The arts are all around us in Madison, so it felt right to tuck them into the actual landscape,” she says. See more of Laura’s work on her website.
