A projectile struck a terminal at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Sunday, October 11, causing a fire and an unspecified number of injuries, according to the Saudi-led coalition and the kingdom’s civil aviation authority.

Saudi air defenses intercepted a cruise missile in the vicinity of the airport. The facility, which serves a city of roughly 8 million people, remained closed after the previous day’s attack, with damage assessments ongoing and flights suspended or diverted.

The Sunday strike followed a missile attack on Saturday that killed 13 people and wounded 309 others, some critically, marking the third assault on the airport in a week. Saudi authorities initially reported 12 deaths, though the death toll rose to 13 on Sunday when a seriously wounded Indian national died in a local hospital.

The dead included four Saudi citizens, two Bangladeshis, and one national each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, and Sudan. An Egyptian flight attendant employed by a Saudi airline was also among those killed. Earlier attacks on the airport that week killed at least three Saudi citizens, including a pilot, and damaged a commercial aircraft on the tarmac.

Yemen’s Houthis claimed responsibility for the Saturday attack and for additional operations in the preceding 24 hours that they said targeted the Riyadh airport multiple times, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, and two Saudi Aramco facilities. Military spokesman Yahya Saree stated that the group used ballistic and cruise missiles and drones.

The Houthis renewed warnings to airlines, airport staff, and travelers against using Saudi airports and airspace, describing them as a theater of operations, with exceptions for the airports in Mecca and Medina. They framed the strikes as a response to Saudi airstrikes in Yemen, which they said had increased and caused civilian casualties.

The Saudi-led coalition described the Saturday attack as a war crime against a civilian facility and stated that it would respond.

U.S. President Donald Trump indicated that Washington would review whether to join Saudi military actions against the Houthis, though he has previously expressed a reluctance to do so unless U.S. military or shipping assets were attacked.
