The landscape of upcoming elections often remains calm, mirroring the tranquil scenes of the holidays. Yet beneath the surface, tensions simmer. With the new year, attention shifts to potential sleeper races that could bring unexpected drama as 2026 approaches. These contests may not receive mainstream media buzz but could play pivotal roles in determining which party holds power in Congress.

First up is Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, a seasoned contender who has faced minimal challenges since taking office in 1993. His solid hold on his district has made him a recognized figure, particularly following his chairmanship of the House Select Committee on January 6. Yet as the political landscape shifts, new players are entering the ring. Evan Turnage, a young attorney with a mission to address the persistent poverty in Thompson’s district, has announced his candidacy. “I’ve dedicated my life to leveling the playing field,” Turnage stated, underscoring his commitment to uplift those in need. On the Republican side, Ron Eller will aim to capitalize on any fractures within the Democratic incumbency.

Meanwhile, Connecticut offers another potential bellwether. Traditionally considered a Democratic stronghold, the state has previously witnessed competitive races over the past decades. Notably, George Logan, a former state senator, came close to unseating Rep. Jahana Hayes in recent elections. Logan’s past attempts suggest that while Republicans may have struggled to gain traction, they have the opportunity to disrupt the Democrats’ control as they eye 2026.

Turning to Maryland, the GOP hopes to reclaim the sixth congressional district, which has been a sticking point since redistricting ended the lengthy tenure of Rep. Roscoe Bartlett. His unique approach to politics brought unconventional issues to the forefront, yet partisan gerrymandering quashed his influence. David Trone’s recent decision to pursue a Senate seat opens the door for a potentially competitive race between April McClain-Delaney and Neil Parrott, who continues his quest for the seat. The ever-shifting political demographics make it a race worth monitoring.

In Nebraska, the retirement of Rep. Don Bacon creates further uncertainty. This urban-leaning district, typically overshadowed by its Republican roots, brims with candidates from both parties vying for the vacated seat. Omaha City Councilman Brinker Harding currently leads fundraising efforts among Republican contenders. As both parties prepare for what could be a close contest, the dynamics inherent within this race could significantly impact the broader party battle.

New Mexico rounds out the list, where the landscape reflects changes in power. Governed by Democrats in recent years, the political dynamics may shift further with the term-limited departure of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The state offers fertile ground for Republican candidates, though it has trended steadily Democratic. The presence of Deb Haaland, a well-known figure from the Biden administration, boosts the competition. However, with key players like Greggory Hull in the mix for the GOP, an unexpected twist is possible.

As the new year approaches, vigilance will be critical. Each of these sleeper races has the potential to reshape the political landscape, often in ways that fly under the radar. While these contests may seem quiet now, the outcomes could resonate well beyond 2026, influencing both local and national issues as families secure their holiday stories, all while the next chapters in these political narratives unfold.
