Secretary of State Marco Rubio is gaining traction as a potential contender for the 2028 presidential race, bolstered by reports from a donor meeting with President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. According to NBC News, the atmosphere in the room shifted dramatically when Trump inquired about who the attendees preferred as his successor: Vice President J.D. Vance or Rubio.

With about 25 GOP donors present, including notable figures such as New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft and Georgia gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson, Trump’s question was met with enthusiastic support for Rubio. One anonymous attendee described the response as, “almost unanimous for Marco.” Another echoed this sentiment, noting, “It was clear, at least that night.” However, some accounts indicated that the preference was not so one-sided, with one person suggesting that opinions were more evenly divided between Rubio and Vance.

Following this initial show of support, there were notable shifts in prediction markets. Kalshi assigned Rubio a 20 percent chance of winning the presidency, nudging him ahead of Vance and California’s Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, who stood at approximately 18 percent. This upward trajectory for Rubio was further reflected on Polymarket, where he gained significant ground recently.

Rubio’s experience and long-standing presence in American politics cannot be overlooked. He served in the U.S. Senate for 14 years, representing Florida—a state critical to presidential elections. His tenure includes various key roles in Trump’s cabinet, further underlining his deep connections within the party. His involvement has led to a humorous phenomenon online, with memes popping up suggesting that any new vacancy in government can expect him to step in, given his history of taking on multiple positions, including serving as the interim National Security Advisor and acting head of the National Archives.

In contrast, Vance remains a contender for the GOP’s mantle and is viewed as a strong ally in Trump’s administration. Since being appointed, he has tackled national fraud issues, underscoring his importance within the party. Despite their different roles, both Rubio and Vance are part of the evolving Republican landscape and are indicative of its shifting dynamics.

Rubio has already faced questions about a possible primary challenge against Vance in 2028. However, he has chosen to back Vance for now, suggesting a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect between the two. As the 2028 primary season approaches, it remains to be seen who ultimately will inherit Trump’s legacy and carry the torch for the MAGA movement.

The dynamics between these two figures reflect broader trends within the GOP, as party elites consider how best to navigate the post-Trump landscape. With mixed feelings evident among donors and supporters, both men will need to carefully position themselves in the lead-up to the primaries. The stakes are high, and the fight within the party for future leadership promises to be fierce.
