Two helicopters crashed into each other in the air in New Jersey, killing one person and critically injuring another.

Rescuers responded to a report of an aviation crash around 11.25am local time on Sunday, Hammonton police chief Kevin Friel said.

Police and fire crews extinguished flames that engulfed one of the aircraft.

One person was killed and another was transported to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Video from the scene showed a helicopter spinning rapidly to the ground.

The Federal Aviation Administration described the scene as a mid-air collision between an Enstrom F-28A helicopter and an Enstrom 280C helicopter over Hammonton Municipal Airport.

Only the pilots were on board each aircraft.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board will be investigating the crash, Mr Friel said.
