Woman and dog in high grassWe tend to think of sensing as through the physical senses. However, there are other ways of sensing that we may pay less attention to or may not have shown up yet.

Science tells us that our body has 3 sensory systems:

1) Exteroceptive system: is the usual senses, although I describe seven.

We also have subtler versions of the senses that can sense into deeper layers of the world and are less localized. For example, seeing inside the body, hearing more refined levels, or smelling at a distance. When you realize that sensing is a quality of consciousness, the limits come off.

2) Proprioceptive System: is what monitors our body’s position and movement. For many, this is subconscious unless we train in a related field like athletics.

3) Interoceptive System: is the signals from the organs inside the body. Our heartbeat, organ movement, hunger, how rested we are, and other sensations. Science also connects emotions to this system. However, in my experience, emotions can relate to these signals but function energetically, existing a stage deeper than the physical.

Trauma can interrupt these signals. It’s not unusual for us to be, as if, cut off at the neck to avoid emotions and sensations. If we don’t know how to process our stuff, we avoid it. We live in our heads mentally and physically.

Living a fuller life is living more consciously of everything. Our limitlessness and our limits both.
