Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwaySome Republicans are blasting President Donald Trump over his administration’s efforts to lower U.S. beef prices by temporarily allowing up to 300,000 metric tons of ground beef to be imported without tariffs.
“Importing a bunch of foreign beef is just a giant gift to the meat packers who then get to undercut our American ranchers who cannot differentiate their product from the cheap foreign shit,” right-wing podcaster Tomi Lahren said on X, adding that American ranchers are “being driven out of business so the land can be gobbled up for data centers and other bullshit.”
If this is the plan the VERY LEAST that can be done is mandatory country of origin labeling so consumers know where the beef they’re buying is coming from. — Tomi Lahren (@TomiLahren) August 21, 2026Trump announced Friday on Truth Social that he had “concluded a deal to substantially lower the price of ground beef for working American families.” He also blamed the Biden administration for high beef prices, ignoring factors like the spread of New World screwworm.
“We have a commitment that this beef will be sold at 25 percent below current market prices,” Trump said in his announcement. “This deal will reduce prices for Americans while giving space for our Great American Beef Herd to grow again.”
The new policy is similar to Trump’s October proposal to import beef from Argentina, which also struck a nerve with Lahren and other Republicans. In his Friday announcement, he did not specify which country or countries would be supplying the beef.
The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association issued a statement following Trump’s announcement, making it clear that it was “disappointed.”
“While America’s cattle producers share the goal of keeping groceries affordable for consumers, flooding the market with government-subsidized, below-market beef is not the way to rebuild the American cattle herd,” the statement read. “Cattle markets have already turned sharply lower this morning, to the detriment of farmers and ranchers.”
Multiple Republicans voiced criticism of Trump’s move, including Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), who called it “a slap in the face to American cattlemen & consumers.”
What a slap in the face to American cattlemen & consumers. Worse than socialism! Dumping foreign beef in U.S. markets can temporarily lower prices but it won’t incentivize American farmers to raise more beef. Bring back Country Of Origin Labels & pass my PRIME Act. pic.twitter.com/18Ml6NlRxB
— Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) August 21, 2026As ranchers continue to face historically low herd sizes, this move undercuts American farmers and ranchers by flooding the market with lower quality foreign beef.
Nobody raises better beef than Nebraska ranchers, and price controls should never be used to give foreign beef a… https://t.co/0yPcCJ0f6e
Import the foreign beef, fine, BUT LABEL IT AS SUCH. We have NO mandatory country of origin labeling on beef.
This is like throwing a bunch of cheap SHEIN shit into Nordstrom and refusing to brand it as such.
Why do we have American herd shortages? Probably because for the…
If Trump really wanted to lower beef prices he would support Massie’s PRIME Act which allows individual states to permit local custom slaughterhouses to sell individual cuts of meat directly to consumers, restaurants, and grocery stores within that same state. But instead the… pic.twitter.com/feQtEmoqTy
— Former Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene🇺🇸 (@FmrRepMTG) August 21, 2026President Trump says importing more foreign beef will bring prices down. I understand the goal but why is the “America First” answer to expensive beef: more FOREIGN beef?
We have American ranchers READY to feed American families. The problem is that federal rules and a highly…
President Trump is right to make lowering grocery costs for American families a priority. I share his commitment to bringing those costs down.
At the same time, short-term relief can’t come at the expense of American ranchers, free markets and long-term solutions. American…
I understand the President taking action to lower prices at the grocery store, but it cannot happen on the backs of our ranchers.
Montana producers cannot be asked to absorb the cost. We must protect our ranchers and strengthen the American cattle herd so American beef remains… https://t.co/k2hIYRax1C
