What did a Roman go grocery shopping look like? The macellum was the beating commercial heart of the Roman city — a purpose-built indoor market for meat, fish, and provisions, found not just in Rome but stamped across the entire empire wherever Roman urbanism took root. In this video we explore the macellum in depth: its origins in the late Roman Republic, its distinctive architecture (colonnaded courtyards, a central tholos, dedicated shop units called tabernae), and how it varied — and stayed remarkably consistent — from site to site.
