I can't claim that this is remotely important but it caught my attention anyway. Ryan Reynolds gave a red carpet interview where he talked about his feelings about the 1980s being "a brutal, brutal time" for everyone. Here's the clip.

“The 80s was a brutal, brutal time for people. It was a fucking mess and people forget that. It was a tremendous strife. Socio political tensions everywhere. We were still pretty fresh off a Cuban missile crisis, which was only 15-20 years before. It’s a tumultuous period, but you look back at it now and you’re like, ‘Oh, yeah. ‘Top Gun.’ Cocaine!’ Like, ‘No!’ It was really scary.”

In his defense, there was a lot happening in the world during the 1980s. We spent years digging out from under 1970s stagflation. Then you had the death rattle of the USSR, Reagan's "tear down that wall" speech in Berlin and the actual fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. That conflict may be why Reynolds has the Cuban missile crisis on his mind.

And no doubt it was all scary for some people, including Nena, who famously wrote a hit song about the threat of nuclear war. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Reynolds had this song in mind.

To be fair, Nena wasn't alone. There was "Two Tribes" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, "Russians" by Sting, "Land of Confusion" by Genesis and (my favorite of this bunch) "Overkill" by Men at Work.

You can also include the 80s classic "Melt With You" by Modern English which has been described as an apocalyptic love song. And don't forget "Red Skies" by the Fixx and "The Future's So Bright, I Gotta Wear Shades" by Timbuk 3. You can probably think of more.

The same themes made it into the movies we saw as well. Everyone remembers War Games, Red Dawn and Top Gun. And of course we had Rocky IV which was not subtle.

So, yes, there was a lot of Cold War worry circulating in the 1980s bloodstream. That's definitely true. But also, the 1980s were pretty great if you grew up in America. Sure, we heard a lot about Russia and the Cold War but the music was pretty great and so were the movies. 

I went to high school and college in the 1980s and we really did not spend all of our time moping about the end of the world. It was one theme that was there in the background but things were pretty for many people at the time. The economy improved. The vibe, if you will, was pretty positive. Lots of people on X who grew up in the 80s have been pointing this out.

Most of us really weren't freaking out about the Cold War non-stop, we were enjoying all the new music on the radio, watching MTV, going to concerts, going to the movies, going to the mall, going to school and eventually going on dates. 

If you grew up in the 1980s life was pretty good. We somehow managed to exist without cell phones and without social media and I think maybe we were healthier for it. It wasn't brutal. It was tremendous fun hanging out with a group of friends every weekend. Like a lot of other people, I look back on it fondly.

The 80s isn’t a decade. It’s an American cultural phenomenon that began in 1983 and ended on September 24, 1991, when Nevermind was released.

It was a period of unbridled optimism and glorious excess. Just look at the music, movies, fashion, cars. It was a vibe.

Of course bad things happened. Bad things always happen.

But nobody walked around talking about “socio-political issues.” Algorithms didn’t feed us rage bait 24/7.

There was enough technology, but not too much.

There were no cell phones. (I have no idea how we got around.)

We listened to radio and bought albums on cassettes. We read newspapers.

Kids disappeared on their bikes all day.

Malls were packed and local economies thrived.

It was the high-water mark for human civilization.

And of course we won the Cold War. The Berlin Wall was torn down before the 80s ended. That moment was memorialized in another hit song that came out in 1990s.

There was another big song released the same year about the same topic by a band I actually saw in the 80s.

And of course the Berlin Wall was just the start. The USSR would fall apart just a couple years later. But maybe give Reynolds a break. He's Canadian and didn't come to the U.S. until the mid-90s (he was still a teenager). So he may have missed a fair bit of the 80s that a lot of us experienced.
