Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham says A’ja Wilson’s trip into the stands after a foul call “could have called for a suspension”

Indiana Fever guard is calling out the blatant double standard in the WNBA after Las Vegas Aces A’ja Wilson escaped suspension following her heated confrontation with a Fever fan.

Cunningham addressed the controversy during the latest episode of her “No Hesitation” show, suggesting that Wilson’s status as a four-time WNBA MVP may have influenced the league’s decision not to suspend her.

The Gateway Pundit reported on the original circus on Sept. 30. In the fourth quarter of Game 2 of the first-round series at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, Wilson got tangled up with Cunningham, Cunningham was whistled for the foul, and a courtside fan stood, pointed, and, according to fan video circulated after the game, told Wilson the foul was on her.

Wilson turned, left the court, and went straight at the man, pointing and yelling until teammates and security got between them.

She drew a technical for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Fever won, 99-89. The fan was briefly pulled, then put right back in his seat.  He did nothing wrong.

The Indiana Fever later said arena security spoke with the fan and witnesses and “determined there was no violation of the Fan Code of Conduct; the fan was not removed from the arena. We consider the matter closed,” according to The Athletic.

Wilson told reporters she does not “get into the bullshit,” then explained why she did anyway: “If I see a man come at me, taking steps towards me and pointing at me, I don’t give a damn what you said. I don’t give a damn how you said it. The tone, that is unacceptable.”

Cunningham said on her show, "That could have called for a suspension, but you know she’s like the LeBron James of our league, so of course they’re not going to suspend her.”

She added that “something should have happened” and described the league’s handling of the incident as a “double standard.”

Transcript below:

Cunningham: "If you really want sports fans, then you're going to get sports fans. And that includes pointing. That includes getting yelled at, probably getting called names. With all the praise and all the great things that come with it, you also got to look at the negative side.

And I'm not saying that this guy did anything wrong. I don't think he did absolutely anything wrong.

And if you want to get technical, that could have caused for suspension. But she's like the LeBron James of our league, and so, of course, they're not going to suspend her. So I'm not even going to get into that. But she should have been—something should have happened there. The two people who came off the bench onto the court, that should have happened.

And so, I think there's definitely a double standard. I think, of course, we wanted her to play. I think that makes for good basketball. I'm not asking for that. And I don't think it would've been—if we would've won and she wouldn't have been there, I don't think it would've been fair.

I think we would've gotten a lot of backlash from that. But I think for someone pointing and saying that the foul was on you, like, grow up. I'm over it. Grow up.

...Like, who would have thought someone pointing would just cause so many people to go into a mental spiral?

Like, that says a lot more about you and your mental status than anything that the fans are doing."

Days after Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson left the floor and went after a Fever fan in the baseline seats, and walked away with nothing more than a technical, Cunningham torched the league’s two-tier justice…

WNBA rules require the automatic ejection of any player who deliberately enters the spectator stands, while additional discipline, including a fine or suspension, may be imposed by the Commissioner depending on the circumstances.

According to Reuters, the league determined that Wilson remained inside the designated “player escape lane” during the confrontation and therefore would not be suspended for the deciding Game 3. Aces players Kalani Brown and Kierstan Bell also avoided discipline after leaving the bench area during the incident.
