There’s something incredibly special about round homes, and this spectacular wooden roundhouse in the forests of British Columbia takes the classic yurt concept to a whole new level. Matt and Adrienne wanted to create a sustainable and affordable family home that they could largely build themselves. Starting with a wooden yurt kitset gave them a fast and practical way to get the main structure up, before putting an incredible amount of work into transforming it into a warm, beautifully finished 730ft2 (68m2) family home. Inside, natural timber, clay walls, a soaring ceiling, central skylight and wood stove give the home an amazing sense of warmth and character, while the round floor plan has inspired some wonderfully creative design solutions. Set on their own three-acre property, the home is surrounded by forest, productive gardens and a collection of charming guest bunkies. It’s a beautiful example of how a kitset home, some serious DIY effort and a clever alternative design can come together to create something truly special. And when it comes to affordable family housing, the final cost of this project makes the build even more impressive. We hope you enjoy the tour! Matt and Adrienne also have some of their bunkies available to rent.
