Discovering what real spiritual power is, how to expand it, and how to use it in the service of life. This is the first session of Standing With the Creator: Building Spiritual Capacity the Arikara Way, a seven-part series from the Sounds True Foundation with Jasper Young Bear. He is a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, and he is sharing these teachings in response to the urgency of our times. After a prayer to the four directions, offered in Arikara and in English, he teaches on spiritual power: that it comes from sacrifice, and that sacrifice begins with changing yourself. Forgiving the unforgivable, including the hurts you have forgotten you carry. Putting the creator at the centre of every meal. Praying in whatever language your ancestors spoke. He describes the fasting traditions of the Northern Plains as they are practised in his community, under elders and never alone, and when Tami Simon asks how someone concerned for their health can approach any of this, he answers honestly that it is hard and that it is done with a people. He shares the vow he made as a teenager that his pain would become a prayer, speaks about colonisation and the present moment, and closes with a manifesting song and a four-direction water ceremony everyone watching can join.
