Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayOn 22 September 2026, diesel hit $6.53 a gallon — the highest national average AAA has ever recorded. About two months earlier, Valero reported its most profitable quarter ever, measured by earnings per share: $12.62 a share, up from $2.28 a year before. Two records. Same crisis. To Angel Diaz, whose family runs 20 trucks out of Wilmington, California, by the Port of Los Angeles, the gap between what crude oil costs and what diesel sells for is a cost — part of every gallon he puts in a truck. To a refinery, that same gap is the margin. In September it climbed to the highest level on record. When the White House floated stopping diesel exports for 90 days to keep fuel at home, shares of American refiners fell. The market knew where the profit was: in sending the diesel away. Then the twist — the Energy Secretary and other analysts warned a ban would probably have made fuel more expensive, and on 2 October the President dropped it. In this crisis, the people who own the refineries win either way. What this video does not say: Valero broke no law, and the court filings behind this autumn's trucking bankruptcies do not blame diesel. Nobody had to do anything wrong for this to happen. Valero's next quarterly report covers July, August and September — the months diesel set its all-time record.
