One of the few great things about living on X, which is something I do to help me keep up with events, is that there is a significant effort by some people to provide real-time rebuttals to the Narrative™ du jour. 

After Trump's election integrity speech, the left kicked into high gear, making their very tired "our elections are the most secure in history" arguments. Almost without exception, the meat of their argument comes down to this: Trump is trying to undermine our faith in elections in order to prepare the way for his own manipulation of the midterm elections.

You've all seen it or heard it; there is no real attempt to rebut the charges, but to go around them by questioning Trump's motives and insinuating that only somebody who wants to cheat would sow doubts about how we do elections today. 

It's a pretty neat way to argue, because it doesn't require getting into pesky facts, appealing to our short-attention-span culture, and tapping into the priors that Trump opponents have regarding Trump.

But those appeals also require people to have extremely short memories, and unaided, most of us fit the bill. With a bit of internet-aided reminding, though, you see the Jedi mind trick. 

For instance, the Democrats are demanding that the Electoral College be discarded. In fact, Governor Spanberger just signed a bill essentially taking Virginia out of the system by assigning Virginia's electoral votes to whoever wins the national popular vote. 

In 2016, though, Democrats actually lobbied that the Electoral College was a bulwark of the Republic, and Electors should reject Donald Trump. They were all-in on the idea.

Then there are the arguments about voting machines and paper ballots. These days, if you argue that we need to go back to paper ballots and hand counting, you are a fascist trying to sow doubt in our oh-so-secure election machinery. After the Russia-Russia-Russia hoax in which every Democrat from Hillary on down claimed that Trump colluded with Russia to "hack" the elections, they were all the rage among Democrats.

Insecure elections were blamed for Trump's victory in 2016, but the moment that Joe Biden was declared the winner, it was treasonous to question even the most bizarre (and in some cases ruled unConstitutional) changes to how we conducted elections.

Democrats still maintain that the 2016 election was stolen because consistency is for suckers. Biden, whose own implausible election victory could not be questioned, maintained that position.

Democrats and media folks spent years trying to make the case — correctly, actually—that vote-counting machines could be hacked. In fact, before each election, there are hackathons in which hackers show how to get around security in the machines, and Democrats highlighted them before they won and now trot out false arguments that they are secure black boxes which, unlike every other computer, cannot be hacked.

2019. Ted Lieu and former Democrat Congresswoman Jane Harman participate in a panel during the annual DEF CON conference.

DEF CON is the world's largest hacker convention. Hackers, computer security experts, intelligence community members, and many others get together to discuss ideas, threats, and to hold hacking contests.

Jane Harman served nine terms in Congress, sat on all the major security committees, and was the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee. She also is President of the Woodrow Wilson think tank and sits on numerous security advisory boards.

Harman: The 2020 election is not secure. At least a third of all voting machines are totally vulnerable.

Lieu and Harman were there because DEF CON had recently held a "voting village" where hackers attempted (and succeeded) in hacking into our voting machines. Teenagers were even able to hack into some machines.

Ted Lieu urged the hackers to meet with media and to speak out about how vulnerable our voting machines are. Lieu said the public needed to know how vulnerable our elections are.

Lieu also criticized McConnell for not passing election security legislation that would require paper trails for all votes. 😂

Democrats and the media regularly spoke about the vulnerabilities of our elections, all the way up until the 2020 election. Immediately after the 2020 election it became forbidden to question the security of our elections. They all just began reciting the talking point "It was the most secure election ever."

There are many routes around security measures, and the claim that machines are not hackable is absurd. Elections are run by volunteers, and election officials are hardly our best, brightest, and most trained. You don't have to be part of a massive conspiracy to unwittingly help the ill-intentioned, either.

#2 All electronic voting equipment can easily be hacked because all such equipment must receive programming before each election from memory cards prepared on election management systems which are computers often connected to the internet running out-of-date versions of Windows.

If a county election management system is infected with malware, the malware can spread from that system to the USB drives, which then would transfer it to all the voting machines, scanners, and ballot-marking devices in the county.

Most U.S. election systems are programmed by local county election officials or third-party vendors, who plug previously-used USB drives into computers connected to the internet before plugging those same USB drives into the optical scanners, tabulators, and voting machines that collect, count, and determine election results.

Democrats keep repeating that there is no evidence of voter fraud, so we shouldn't go to any basic efforts to prevent it, such as ensuring that only eligible voters cast ballots. They call every attempt to clean voter rolls, which should be basic electoral hygiene, "Jim Crow," as if dead voters and illegal aliens have a Constitutional right to vote. 

Yet every time a case of voter fraud is ferreted out, they call it rare, or claim that it being uncovered is proof that it can't be accomplished.

In 2022, in DeKalb County Georgia, there was a a democrat primary for county commissioner district 2. Michelle Long Spears was the expected winner but she lost huge and even received ZERO votes in her home precinct where she and her husband voted for her. She demanded a recount. The state resisted. DeKalb County said count them by hand.

The result. She won. In the recount, it was learned that not only did a software error give her votes to another candidate but 1,802 votes were skipped by the machines. No reason was ever given.

Of course, almost without exception, it is not election officials who uncover the fraud or "mistakes," but ordinary citizens with suspicion, or candidates who suspect they got screwed. Election officials have a strong incentive to discount any flaws because, well, they made the mistakes or allowed the fraud to happen. 

It's the same reason why state officials in Minnesota and elsewhere completely missed, or even aided, the welfare fraud that is being uncovered today. billions, perhaps trillions of dollars, were stolen, and government officials looked the other way. 

Finally, after Trump's speech last week, Pravda and the Democrats spent a lot of effort "debunking" claims that Trump never made in his speech. They went into deep dives, taking on and disproving claims that he never made, which was a pretty neat trick. It was easy to miss that they were "disproving" not Trump's claims but an entirely invented set, which allowed them to skirt the fact that he had released documents proving his case.

Trump, for instance, never claimed that the documents he released proved the election in 2020 was stolen. Yet an enormous amount of ink was spent "debunking" that claim. 

It's a great sophistical trick. Get people nodding along with your argument, and they eventually miss that you never actually addressed the actual claims. 

Well, Trump's claims were backed up, and the media just ignored the evidence because it was damning.
