A dragonfly nymph spends its life underwater. Then one day it crawls up a reed, out of the water, and gets ready to fly. Richard Rudd offers this as an image for the bewildering moment we are living through as humans right now. Many of us feel like we are climbing the reed, in the middle of a transition we do not fully understand. In this conversation, Richard describes what that shift actually feels like from the inside. It is moving into an integrative, transcendent perspective. It is remembering that we are eternal beings. It is approaching reality the way a child does, believing miracles are possible, with a soft heart and an open mind. That, he says, is the contemplative view. And what it reveals is the love that lies at the heart of everything. Not self-love exactly, not even universal love, but the nature of being itself. When you start to have flashes of that, something changes. You stop worrying so much about the world and where it is heading. Because you realise that love is underneath everything and everyone, even the people playing out their shadow on the world stage. That too, he says, is love at work in the world.
