Kevin Hassett, President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser, made an incredible reach in an attempt to justify a debunked claim about the Trump administration reducing the cost of a Thanksgiving dinner.

Hassett, director of the National Economic Council and the man reportedly tapped to be Trump’s next chair of the Federal Reserve, appeared on Fox News on Tuesday in an attempt to paint a rosy economic picture ahead of the holiday season.

After hailing the “golden age” created by Trump, a claim that even Vice President JD Vance appears reluctant to get behind, Hassett took issue with an unnamed Sunday politics show anchor who “criticized the fact that Walmart said Thanksgiving dinner is cheaper by, I think it was about $10, for a typical Thanksgiving dinner.”

“And then he said, ‘Oh, yes, but they substituted generic stuff,’ as if having a generic something is a crime for ordinary folks. It shows how out of touch these people are,” Hassett continued. (Watch a video clip at the bottom of the story.)

Hassett, a scholar of fiscal policy before joining the Trump White House, seems to be willfully missing the point and ignoring the fact that the “cheaper” dinner suggestion is not based on a like-for-like comparison.

Earlier this month, Trump took credit for what he claimed was Walmart announcing that “Prices for a Thanksgiving Dinner is now down 25% since under Sleepy/Crooked Joe Biden, in 2024.”

But as detailed in a HuffPost analysis, Walmart had not made any comparisons to Thanksgiving prices last year.

In any case, a simple read across reveals Walmart’s 2025 meal package has fewer items than last year’s selection.

When Trump’s claim was shared on X, formerly Twitter, a community note made the same point about fewer items, as well as underlining how premium products were being swapped out for generic ones.

Since the president launched a trade war by slapping steep tariffs on imported goods, inflation has remained stubbornly high.

The Consumer Price Index for September rose 3.0% from a year earlier as food and energy prices picked up.

Following his comments to Kellyanne Conway on Fox News, Hassett faced a backlash.

“It’s hilarious to watch Trumpworld tell poor people to stop complaining Trump has made everything more expensive,” Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) wrote on X. said. “Here Hassett tells poor people to be cool with less and lower quality food – while he and other MAGA millionaires and billionaires eat like kings.”

Meanwhile, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday that Hassett is the front-runner to be the next chair of the Federal Reserve.

Trump has ripped sitting Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, calling the central bank chief a “numbskull” for not cutting interest rates quickly enough.
