Just weeks after admitting he agreed to a peace deal with Iran to avoid a global economic calamity, President Donald Trump on Wednesday said the deal was “over” and disparaged the same leaders he recently praised as moderate and reasonable as “scum” who could not be trusted.

“I don’t want to deal with them, but they’re scum. You know what scum is? They’re scum, they’re sick people, they’re led by sick people, and they’re vicious, violent people,” Trump told reporters at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s just a waste of time dealing with them. They’re liars. We make a deal, and if I make a deal with him, we have a deal. He goes out, he talks. We make a deal. Everyone’s agreed, no nuclear weapons. We make a deal. They go outside, talk to the press, they say we never even talked about it. Is something wrong with them? They’re cuckoo,” he said at a photo opportunity with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

A few hours later, speaking with reporters at a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Trump said he would likely launch attacks on Wednesday, too.

“We’ll probably hit them hard again tonight. I’ll give them a little warning. We’re gonna hit them hard tonight,” he said.

His comments came after the U.S. military announced another round of attacks on Iranian targets around the Persian Gulf, which were in response to Iranian attacks on oil and natural gas tankers trying to pass through the Strait of Hormuz using a channel not approved by Iran.

Prior to Trump’s war, traffic flowed freely through the narrow opening, including a fifth of the world’s crude oil. Oil prices rose Tuesday on Trump’s statement.

Just three weeks ago, Trump was bragging about the “memorandum of understanding” he signed that ended the war that he himself began on Feb. 28 without consulting Congress or any of America’s traditional allies except for Israel, which also participated in the attacks.

At a news conference at the close of the G7 summit in France on June 17, Trump admitted that he decided to end the war because oil reserves were running on empty the world over and economic disaster was just weeks away.

“The one thing I didn’t want to see is I didn’t want to see economic catastrophe,” he said then. “If you kept this going, that could have happened.”
