President Donald Trump has approved nearly $488 million in federal disaster relief funding for six states, authorizing assistance to help communities recover from devastating storms, tornadoes, flooding and other severe weather events that caused widespread damage across parts of the country.

The funding package totals approximately $487.1 million and includes disaster assistance for Florida, Missouri, Wisconsin, Mississippi, Kansas and Idaho. The largest allocation by far will go to Florida, where federal officials approved $415.9 million following the state’s disaster declaration request.

Much of that funding is expected to support recovery efforts in Florida’s Panhandle, an area that experienced significant storm-related damage. In addition to Florida, the Trump administration approved $27.6 million for Missouri to assist with recovery from severe storms, tornadoes and flooding.

Wisconsin will receive $22.6 million for damage caused by severe storms, tornadoes and flooding, while Mississippi was approved for $11 million to address recovery costs stemming from severe storms, straight-line winds, tornadoes and flooding. Kansas will receive $5.5 million for severe storm recovery, and Idaho was approved for $4.5 million to help communities impacted by severe storms, high winds, flooding and landslides.

The funding is being made available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which coordinates federal disaster assistance after a president approves a major disaster declaration or emergency declaration. The assistance helps state and local governments pay for eligible disaster recovery expenses, including debris removal, emergency protective measures and repairs to damaged public infrastructure.

Federal disaster declarations can also unlock additional resources for affected communities, allowing local governments to seek reimbursement for recovery projects while helping accelerate rebuilding efforts after major weather events. Depending on the declaration, certain programs may also provide assistance to individuals and families whose homes or property were damaged.

The approvals come after months of severe weather affected multiple regions of the United States. Several states experienced destructive tornado outbreaks, flash flooding, damaging straight-line winds and heavy rainfall that overwhelmed local resources and prompted governors to request federal assistance.

Florida’s approval represents the overwhelming majority of the disaster funding, accounting for more than 85 percent of the total package. The state’s Panhandle has repeatedly faced severe weather in recent years, with powerful storms causing damage to roads, utilities, public buildings and other critical infrastructure.

Missouri and Wisconsin also experienced significant tornado activity and flooding, resulting in extensive cleanup operations and infrastructure repairs. Mississippi’s declaration covers multiple forms of severe weather, including tornadoes and damaging winds, while Kansas and Idaho will use their approved funding to address storm-related damage unique to their affected regions.

Under FEMA’s Public Assistance program, eligible applicants such as state agencies, local governments and certain nonprofit organizations may receive federal reimbursement for emergency work and permanent repairs to facilities damaged during declared disasters. The agency also works alongside state emergency management officials throughout the recovery process to coordinate rebuilding efforts and distribute approved federal funds.

Tuesday’s approvals continue the administration’s processing of disaster declaration requests submitted by governors seeking federal assistance after determining that state and local resources alone were insufficient to address the scope of the damage. Once a presidential declaration is approved, FEMA can begin coordinating recovery efforts with state and local officials while making federal funding available for eligible projects.
