After speaking at the midterm campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Monday, President Donald Trump flashed the inside of his navy suit to the crowd and photographers, showing off a JoS. A. Bank label.

People online quickly seized on the detail. Some joked that a president in an off-the-rack mall suit signaled a recession, while others said it gave Trump something in common with former President Joe Biden, a longtime fan of the brand.

Why is Trump wearing suits from Jos. A. Bank? It's a perfectly fine choice if you're on a budget, but he's a billionaire. Even assuming he wants to buy American-made, he could get higher-quality suits from J. Press or Brooks. https://t.co/ppSyERTg4A

Menswear reporter Derek Guy questioned the fashion choice, especially since the brand’s suits are made overseas.

“Interesting. Jos. A. Bank suits are all made overseas, typically in countries like China and Bangladesh,” Guy wrote. “I wonder why Trump chose the cheap import over the US-made suit.”

Interesting.

Jos. A. Bank suits are all made overseas, typically in countries like China and Bangladesh. They carry an associate label called Joseph Abboud, which is made in the United States.

When asked why the origin mattered, Guy referred to Trump’s 2025 inaugural address, in which he said, “We must protect our borders from the ravages of other countries making our products, stealing our companies, and destroying our jobs. Protection will lead to great prosperity and strength.” Guy did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

JoS. A. Bank advertises itself as a provider of men’s tailored apparel, with its most expensive suits costing between $630 and $680.

Men’s Wearhouse bought the company in 2014 for $1.8 billion, and both now operate under parent company Tailored Brands. Tailored Brands says it’s the largest tailored clothing factory in the U.S., which is where JoS. A. Bank’s associate label, Joseph Abboud, is produced.

However, according to a July 10 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it relies on “a network of global suppliers, primarily in Asia,” with suppliers in Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh and China. (Although the company also notes it has reduced sourcing from China by 20% in 2024 and 11% in 2025.)

Tailored Brands did not respond to HuffPost’s request for comment by the time of publication.

Trump once had his own retail menswear line called the Donald J. Trump Signature Collection, which debuted in 2004 and primarily sold at Macy’s, and included suits, dress shirts and ties. According to BuzzFeed News in 2016, some of the items sold on Amazon were listed as “Made in USA,” but the physical labels said, “Made in Indonesia.”

The president has previously said he only wears Brioni suits, an expensive Italian brand. Meredith McIver, the ghostwriter behind Trump’s 2004 book, “Trump: Think Like a Billionaire,” told GQ Magazine in 2016 that Trump had bragged that Brioni “graciously suppl[ied] me with my clothing for ‘The Apprentice.’”
