North Carolina’s leaders are slamming President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown for “stoking fear,” fueling division and having a chilling effect on residents in the state’s largest city.

“Everyone wants to be safe…but the actions of too many federal agents are doing the exact opposite in Charlotte,” said North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein (D) in a Sunday Instagram post. “It’s stoking fear and dividing our community.”

Charlotte is the latest target of the White House’s sweeping immigration enforcement actions, which have included violent raids and brutal arrests in Democrat-led cities across the country.

In one instance, federal agents smashed a car window on Saturday while detaining a U.S. citizen. In another, they dragged an employee out of a grocery store and pinned him down while making an arrest. And in a third, agents grabbed a congregant who was doing yard work outside of a church and sent others fleeing into the woods.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents were sent to Charlotte beginning on Saturday in an alleged effort to apprehend undocumented immigrants who’ve committed crimes. (As The Guardian reported in September, the data shows that many immigrants in detention have no criminal record.)

As of Monday, the agency had arrested 130 people, including multiple undocumented immigrants who’ve been convicted of driving while intoxicated, per a DHS release.

Charlotte advocates and leaders, meanwhile, stress that agents are instilling fear in local communities with their violent tactics and racial profiling.

Manolo’s, a popular local Latino bakery, is temporarily shuttered for the first time in 28 years due to the owner’s concerns for the safety of his customers. And a Spanish-language service at Casa Viva Church was only half-full this weekend as people opted to stay home, Pastor Alejandro Montez told NBC News.

“We have seen our families, including U.S. citizens, that are being racially profiled, targeted, questioned, detained and harassed,” Charlotte Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera told The Associated Press. “This is not community safety. This is community chaos.”
