President Donald Trump said the U.S. will “run” Venezuela until a “transition” can take place following a military operation.

“We’re going to run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,” Trump told reporters during a Saturday morning press conference.

Trump was referring to a large-scale military operation that saw the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. The two face drug and gun charges after an indictment in New York.

“They will soon face the full wrath of American justice on American soil in American courts,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.

Trump posted a photo of Maduro on his Truth Social page following the capture. Maduro’s eyes and ears are covered in the photo.

“Nicolas Maduro on board the USS Iwo Jima,” Trump wrote.

Throughout the morning, Trump bragged about the operation, which included cutting off power throughout the capital city of Caracas.

“If you would have seen what happened, I watched it literally like I was watching a television show,” Trump boasted on “Fox & Friends” before his news conference.

During his remarks later that morning, Trump said it was “an assault like people have not seen since World War II.”

Trump, who has made his intentions clear that the U.S. will “be very much involved” in taking oil from Venezuela, reiterated that the U.S. will rule over Venezuela.

“So we don’t wanna be involved with somebody else getting in and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years,” Trump said during the news conference. “We’re gonna run it, essentially.”
