Tami Simon asks Christopher Bache what he takes the intention behind the universe to be, and why any of this was created at all. He calls it the deep, deep heart of the matter, and then does something unusual for anyone answering a question like that. He begins by saying he does not know. Whatever he understands is incomplete, because the magnitude of this being is so vast. Even after twenty years of exploration he learned, late in the journey, that there were dimensions beyond anything he had seen. What he offers next is what his experience leads him toward. Some hold that this oneness creates in order to know itself, and he has never personally found that convincing. What speaks to him more is that it creates in order to share itself. It divides into sparks of light, which become human beings and human souls, and those souls draw out its power and potential in this particular form. Behind creation, in other words, is a profound love that wants to share its own existence in as many ways as it can find. As for what all this growth is for, he resists answering. The moment we pin it to a goal, he suggests, we are anthropomorphising and shrinking a horizon we ought to be watching. We will be a very different species ten thousand years from now, growing into things we may not currently be able to imagine. So the safer generalisation is simply that creation is about becoming more, about drawing out powers that are latent in us. And underneath all of it, he thinks, is an exercise in love.
