Two people have died and five others were taken to hospital following a fire in Glasgow.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze within a first-floor flat in a four-storey building in Hughenden Lane, Hyndland, at about 10.20pm on Monday.

Nine fire engines and a height appliance were mobilised, along with five ambulances, a paramedic response unit and two trauma teams.

Police Scotland said a man and a woman were pronounced dead at the scene.

The force said their next of kin have been informed.

Five others were taken to hospital for the effects of smoke inhalation.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The fire is not believed to be suspicious, and no criminality has been established."

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said all properties in the building were evacuated, and firefighters rescued a number of residents.

Fire service area commander Andy Kenna said: "Sadly, two people were found to have passed away at the scene. Our thoughts very much remain with their friends, family, and wider community at this sad time.

"Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and prevent further spread to other properties."

The Scottish Ambulance Service said two patients were taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and three were transported to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

A spokesperson added: "A further patient was treated and discharged at the scene."
