Your partner says something about what happened that you know is not accurate. You have a choice. You can correct them, in the name of truth. Or you can stay in the relationship. Stan Tatkin is blunt about which one matters. You can be right, or you can be in a relationship. Not both. Keep trying and you just irritate them and become more threatening. The person who perceives it wins. So instead of defending your version, you fix it. I don't know if I said that, but it sounds like me, and it was wrong, and I'm sorry. That's it. Anything more is a waste of time and energy, and worse, it amplifies the problem. The deeper principle underneath all of it: a relationship is a team sport. It is not a solo game, and if you play it like one there will be consequences. Stan covers why making unilateral decisions is a nuclear bomb, why couples who never do a postmortem on their fights keep repeating them, and the rules that protect step-families, where the non-blood parent must always be shielded and the blood parent does the disciplining.
