House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) appeared to break with President Donald Trump on the war in Iran Tuesday when pressed on whether he would support a War Powers Act resolution or an Authorization for Use of Military Force.

“The administration is working very hard, the commander-in-chief and the whole Department of War, they’re working very hard to bring this to a resolution. There’s a lot of discussions about how that will be done. We’re all closely watching those developments, of course,” Johnson told reporters at the Capitol in likely his last press conference before Congress’ upcoming recess. “I don’t think an AUMF is in order right now. I think we need to bring this to a resolution.”

As the U.S. military launched yet another round of strikes on Iran, Trump gave a dim view of holding peace talks to end the war. The president claimed that Iran wants to “desperately meet. And until they’re ready to meet in a meaningful way, we have no interest in meeting.”

Johnson also claimed the Trump administration was working “around the clock” to resolve the conflict in a way that doesn’t result in the deaths of more American troops. To date, 16 U.S. service members have been killed since Israel and the U.S. launched the war in February, according to a report from NPR.

“This is a great tragedy — it shouldn’t happen. But it is a very important, very important objective that I believe we’ve achieved, to ensure that the largest state sponsor of terrorism does not have a nuclear weapon. That would be a disaster for everybody, and everybody around the world understands that. Now we’ve got to wrap it up,” Johnson said.
