Many people are frightened by polarisation right now, at the level of the country, the family, society, and among friends, and some feel unsafe. So what should we do? All of it, in his tradition, comes from what he calls the view of singularity, meaning the self-centred view: my way is better, and theirs is not. He gives an ordinary example. In one study, seventy percent of taxi drivers rated their own driving as above average. And anyone who has had a near miss in a friend's car knows the thought that arrives: if I were driving, we would be safer. This is a natural phenomenon, he says, and it comes from that same feeling of self-importance. So the first thing is to acknowledge it. Accept that the view is there. And at the same time, recognise that it is only the surface. A little deeper, in the middle, there is wisdom. Through the feeling of connection there is love and compassion, and awareness and wisdom are already manifesting among us all the time. Deeper still, we are beyond all of it. To transform the division, he suggests, start by simply recognising whatever biases and social effects are at work. Sometimes you can change them and sometimes you cannot. That is okay. Once you recognise them, there is less danger and less harm. Then look toward the deeper essence, where there is awareness, love and compassion. And you can use the feeling of polarisation itself, or the fear of it, as the object of awareness. Just feel it. Not fighting it, not surrendering to it. Eventually, he says, you will see that inside the feeling there is a peace, and that everything is connected, and everything is changing all the time. In that way the very thing that divides us becomes the way through the division and the fear of it.
