House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) argued that Americans “deserve answers” after the Trump administration joined forces with Israel last week to enter a deadly conflict with Iran.

During Sunday’s episode of NBC’s “Meet the Press,” moderator Kristen Welker asked Jeffries his thoughts on the NBC News’ report that President Donald Trump has privately considered sending boots on the ground to Iran.

“Is there any scenario where you would support sending U.S. forces to be on the ground in Iran, Leader Jeffries?” she questioned.

The Democratic leader responded, “No, and in fact candidate Trump suggested that under no circumstances should American service men and women be put into harm’s way in this particular type of situation, particularly as it relates to another endless war in the Middle East.”

“We are deeply saddened right now by the loss of six brave and heroic service men and women who have already lost their lives,” he continued. “We’ll continue to pray for their families and their loved ones.”

Jeffries then declared, “The American people deserve answers from the administration as to how we are going to actually move forward in a way that makes America safer, not more vulnerable.”

On Saturday, Trump remarked that U.S. troops could “possibly” put boots on the ground in Iran while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One.

After a reporter asked Trump if there were any circumstances in which he would send troops to Iran, he replied, “I don’t even want to talk about it now. I don’t think it’s an appropriate question; you know I’m not going to answer it. Could there be? Possibly, for very good reason, have to be very good reason.”

He added: “I would say if we ever did that they would be so decimated that they wouldn’t be able to fight at the ground level.”

Earlier in the interview, Jeffries proclaimed that Americans “don’t want to see billions of dollars being spent to bomb Iran and the Middle East” at the same time Republicans and Trump are “unwilling to spend a dime to lower their groceries bills” or “actually make it more affordable to go see a doctor” or fix “this affordability crisis that is very real in the United States of America.”
