Lee Harris was twenty-three, on the London underground on his way to a fundraising job, replaying an argument with a boyfriend and deciding the boyfriend was wrong. Then a voice arrived from the left side of his head and said: that's an interesting thought, but you're wrong, and here's why. And it explained why the issue was his. What struck him was not only that the advice was sound. His body changed, the constriction that matched the negative thinking shifting and opening. So he asked who they were, and they said: we are your guides, we have been with you your whole life, and you have not heard us since you were six. They turned out to be a group, which threw him, since he had only heard of channelers working with a single being. He never imagined doing it for work. The biggest problem, he says, was how simple it was. He had assumed people who heard their guides were raw vegan yogis on retreat, not ordinary people in early-nineties Britain with a secret spiritual life. He had come out as gay at sixteen. Coming out as a channeler in his twenties was far harder. Tami Simon asks who she is talking to, Lee or the Z's. Lee, he says, because she is asking about his life. For conceptual questions it would be a hybrid of their information and his own intuition, which he describes as turning on a flashlight. There are two modes: eyes closed, channeling the Z's, whose cadence differs from his own, and eyes open, as the grounded intuitive he sounds like now. On skepticism he is unusually clear. People ask how to convince a doubting partner, and he never advises it. The skeptic is reporting their true experience, and only an experience of their own will change that. On learning to channel, he offers a practice: sit quietly with pen and paper and ask a simple opening question. Soul, how am I doing today? Or address it to God, or your guides.
