D.W. Pasulka's book is called The Others: UFOs, AI, and the Secret Forces Guiding Human Destiny. Tami Simon asks the obvious question. What are the secret forces? Not secret on purpose, Pasulka says. Forces we simply never think about. Technology changes how we perceive reality, and most people are unaware of it. She traces the argument back to Plato's Phaedrus, where the invention of writing is debated and warned against, because writing would change memory and change culture, and unless it was treated deliberately as an enhancement to human knowledge, a great deal of knowledge would be lost. The same conversation, she notes, is happening today about artificial intelligence. It is an ancient discussion. What Plato was defending was oral tradition, and she points out that many oral cultures still exist and that a number of indigenous communities refuse to write their history down on purpose. It is a living idea of knowledge, she says, something that can only be conveyed from one voice to another, and all of that is lost when this podcast becomes a transcript. Then the printing press, then radio, then television. Every change in the infrastructure of technology changes human beings along with it. We co-evolve with technology. Those are the hidden forces the book is about. Not a secret society, not a conspiracy, though she admits it sounds like one and that the press liked the title. She is talking about forces that guide human history and that we are never taught. There is no class on how technology changes our perception of reality. There are only classes on how to use it.
